Gyro
A classic Greek street food featuring savory seasoned meat, fresh vegetables, and creamy tzatziki, all wrapped in warm pita bread.
Ingredients
For the Gyro Meat:
- 1 lb pre-sliced gyro meat (lamb/beef blend, or thinly sliced lamb/beef)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat recommended)
- 1/2 English cucumber, grated and excess water squeezed out
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped (or 1 tsp dried dill)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp black pepper
For Assembly:
- 4-6 pita breads
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced
- 1 cup shredded romaine lettuce
- Optional: Crumbled feta cheese
- Optional: Kalamata olives
Instructions
- Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber (squeezed dry), minced garlic, lemon juice, chopped dill, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Prepare Vegetables: Thinly slice the red onion and tomatoes. Shred the lettuce. Set aside.
- Cook the Gyro Meat: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the gyro meat, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned and heated through, about 5-7 minutes. If using pre-sliced meat, separate the slices as they cook.
- Warm the Pita Bread: While the meat cooks, warm the pita breads. You can do this in a dry skillet over medium heat for 30 seconds per side, in a microwave for 15-20 seconds, or in a toaster oven until soft and pliable.
- Assemble the Gyros: Lay a warm pita bread flat. Spread a generous spoonful of tzatziki sauce over the pita.
- Layer Ingredients: Top the tzatziki with a portion of the cooked gyro meat, followed by sliced tomatoes, red onion, and shredded lettuce. Add crumbled feta and olives if desired.
- Serve: Fold or roll the pita to create a gyro sandwich. Serve immediately and enjoy!
